CHARACTER NAME: Olivier Mira Armstrong
CHARACTER AGE: Late 30s/Early 40s
SERIES: Fullmetal Alchemist (Manga/Brotherhood)
CHRONOLOGY: Immediately before the Promised Day
CLASS: Anti-Hero
HOUSING: With her brother, I think?
BACKGROUND: Olivier Mira Armstrong is the eldest daughter of the illustrious and aristocratic Armstrong family, and the Major General in charge of the army and garrison defending the northern border of her country, Amestris.
Amestris is a landlocked nation with a long history of bloody conflict with its neighbors, the largest and most dangerous of which is Drachma, to the north. (Amestris being a stand-in for World War 1/2 Germany, Drachma represents the Russians). Many times Amestris' size, the two countries have been at war for decades. The northern border between Drachma and Amestris is defined by the cold, inhospitable Briggs mountains, with the largest pass blocked by the imposing wall of Fort Briggs. Olivier commands Briggs and Amestris' Northern Army adeptly; her forces are known as the best-trained defenders in all of the military nation.
Little is known about Olivier's early life, though the Armstrong family, former nobility, has been powerful and important in Amestris for much of the nation's history. Her father used to be a prominent general, but these days lives in their big fancy house in the nation's capital telling stories of his glory days.
In the FMA story, Olivier is introduced midway through the series, when protagonists Edward and Alphonse Elric head north seeking information about a way to restore their bodies to their original selves. Though her men initially believe the Elrics to be Drachman spies, they earn a measure of Olivier's trust when they help her defeat a mysterious, unstoppable assailant (the homunculus Sloth) and save her mens' lives in the process. Afterwards, she learns from the Elrics of a deep conspiracy in the military government to kill all of the citizens in Amestris and turn their souls into a priceless Philosopher's Stone to obtain immortality.
Olivier feigns weakness when a member of the military command conspiracy comes to her, plying him for information, and then kills him for giving some of her men a suicide order. She is recalled to the capitol and convinces the nation's Fuhrer to accept her into the secret conspiracy in place of the man she'd killed (after all, he proved he wasn't trustworthy by spilling the beans to her). At the time I am taking her from, she is waiting for the "promised day" when the conspiracy will come to fruition, having planned a coup d'etat with her Northern army as well as the Eastern army of General Grumman and series co-protagonist Roy Mustang.
PERSONALITY: Olivier has two nicknames used, one by her subordinates - "The Ice Queen" - and one by everyone else - "the Northern Wall of Briggs." Both nicknames describe her well; Olivier is harsh, merciless and cold. She is a natural commander who expects greatness from those under her and does not tolerate weakness; as she reminds the Elrics, the hostile, frozen wilderness of Briggs kills the careless easily. Those who are fit and strong will survive, the unfit and weak will cull themselves from the herd, she believes, and as a result has a natural distaste for the alchemy performed by State Alchemists like Edward Elric and her brother, because she sees it as akin to a free handout. Her temper and fury can be legendary, and she has no patience for handling things or people gently, rarely holding back her sharp tongue and harsh judgments to those who fail to live up to her standards. Even she herself is expendable if she proves unfit, she feels.
This is not to say that she lacks depth. Olivier is very skilled at reading people and manipulation, feigning "feminine weakness" in order to make the visiting General understimate her and tell her more about the command's conspiracy. While she is very harsh and demanding towards her subordinates, she also is acutely aware of the effort and sacrifices they make in their work, and her active, hands-on style of command (both in battle and everything else) has earned her an undying, ironclad loyalty from the men of Briggs (as well as their fear). When she sends a detachment of men into the tunnel underneath Briggs to investigate what happened to the last party they sent (apparently killed mercilessly), she gives orders that the tunnel entrance should be permanently sealed after 24 hours if they have not returned... and gives the person in charge of sealing it a broken watch, ensuring that her men are able to safely emerge once they return after the time limit has experied.
Despite the ice in her veins and her strict Darwinist philosophy, Olivier does not casually throw away lives. While she recognizes that danger and death are the risks that any soldier has accepted, she will take great risks to protect the well-being of those who trust her, civilian and military alike.
Just don't expect her to be very nice about it when she does.
POWER: In addition to the massive natural strength inherent to members of the Armstrong family (she throws her massive younger brother around like a rag doll, and he looks like this), Olivier will be gaining "Ultimate Weapon Mastery," meaning that she will instantly become expertly proficient with anything that someone could consider a weapon, from machine gun to slingshot to fighter jet.
She will also be bringing her officer's saber, a heirloom handed down through the Armstrong family for generations.

This is Major General Armstrong. Miles, Buccaneer, if you're hearing this, contact me ASAP. Hell, at this point I'll even take Mustang.
Fuhrer Bradley, if you're hearing this, consider it my official resignation, you cyclopean son of a bitch.
