One that's either an imPort, or has access to unusual technology- though I don't know how you'd use technology to cause what's happening in Maurtia Falls. In either case, it's probably RISE's business. [Even if it's stupid.]

And it's a chance to put on a nice show for all the locals and the government- to show we're helpful and not dangerous- that sort of thing.

A weakness of democracy.

To get the votes of the masses, you have to tell them what they want to hear. You have to promise them the moon, and then obfuscate when you don't deliver.

Our existence is as much a blessing for those in charge here as it is a thorn in their side.

Until people understand that they need to be realistic, at least.

Let's hope they see it as more of a blessing than a problem, even if that isn't the case.

You overestimate people, Sabriel. The sheep of this world-- of any world-- are happy to be lied to, as long as they have food and a warm bed to sleep in at night. If asked to choose between an uncomfortable truth and keeping the wool pulled over their eyes, they'll choose the second every time.

It's no wonder the government wants us here. We're a convenient scapegoat. The masses will welcome us, but in the back of everyone's minds, we're a potential threat at any moment.

RISE was always only ever a stopgap to that.

And a potential shield- if some imPorts are a threat, we can argue that other imPorts are the best way to counter them.

Or at the very least, gain information on what our generous hosts are up to.
